According to the video “How did English Evolve?”, Several centuries after the fall of Rome the Saxons gained control of England and established Old English as the language. As the Danes settled in the north, Old Norse (their native langue) gradually mixed with old English. In 1066, the Norman conquest brought many French words into the English vocabulary. According to the video, the words we choose to use today have deeper historical meaning than we even realize. For example, “a hearty welcome” or “a cordial reception” have the same meaning but different emotional interpretation based on the history of the words used.
Popes view shares many similarities with the video “How did English Evolve?”. He believes that language is organic and has many different faces and expressions. However, unlike the video, Popes view is more about how English has evolved to the state it is today. Whereas, the video had more of a concentration of the history of how English came to be and how words where chosen for their meaning.
